2011 … What a Busy Year You Were…

Well well well… another year gone by… (insert comment about how time flies here)

One day until 2012 – I’ve got myself a little year end cold so I’m hoping to wrap that up along with the end of this year!

It’s been big year for me as you know – relocating to Los Angeles, the HMMA nomination, music videos and other fun stuff.

Do you mind if I jump around a bit? I thought it might be more fun than going in chronological order…I promise to follow some kind of order, but let’s do some jumping first, shall we?

In August I had the opportunity to act in a music video for Disney/Pop star Drew Seeley – it was a blast! (You may know him from High School Musical, Another Cinderella Story and other fun flicks.)

Here’s a photo with Drew, the cast and crew and the final product!

Also in August (and September) I did some background work for CSI: NY, CSI: Miami and Good Christian Bells.

A few of the people I had the pleasure of meeting along the way or working with…

Some show pics from the year…

I started out the year on the road – in the snow – on a southern tour. The snow literally followed me the whole way down through Nashville and Atlanta, where they had a record breaking ice storm. Getting to Louisville was a challenge – apparently they don’t salt the roads in Cincinnati and truthfully, after driving through blustery snow for a while it starts to look like a scene from Star Wars. Since I was going south I didn’t bother to pack my snow boots – foolish – but my cowboy boots really lived up to the job!

Nashville was awesome – I met some incredibly talented musicians and look forward to returning there sometime soon to do some writing!

In February I made my way out to Los Angeles for a two week stint of shows there and San Diego. Also to do a little apartment hunting 🙂

On April 14th I performed on NBC’s The 10! Show to promote my Bon Voyage Show at the Tin Angel which was held that same night. That show’s turnout was incredible – one of my favorite performances to date for sure. Thank you to everyone who was there!

I went out to LA one more time again before making the move (literally a week later) – it was my second time at the ASCAP Expo and I thoroughly recommend it for indie artists looking to network and learn about the business of their craft.

A week later was the big road trip (find that blog and photos HERE)

Since living on the west coast I’ve had the opportunity to explore my hobby of photography a bit – I posted a few blogs about that as well, which you can find HERE and HERE….

Here’s a little look at it…

While back home in September I wrapped up filming for the Hide Music Video – final product coming soon 🙂 It was awesome working with Jonathan and Mike again.

I have absolutely loved living in Los Angeles and getting to know the area and the artists who live there. I’ve been writing with other songwriters (songs like THIS ONE!)

It hasn’t all been work and no play though – I have loved having visitors and doing fun things like taking a road trip to San Francisco, seeing the Phillies beat the Dodgers (sorry Dodger fans), hiking the Hollywood Hills and taking tours of Hollywood!

November brought filming for the Water Rising Music Video as well as the Hollywood Music and Media Awards. Both were excellent experiences – if you click on those links you can see the blogs about those as well! Getting to walk the red carpet for the first time as a nominee was really special and fun.

I rounded out the year back in Philly for a show at World Cafe Live and for holidays with my family. It certainly has been a whirlwind year and I am so happy to get to share it with you all! Thank you always for your support and encouragement – here is to another year of grand adventures in 2012!!

Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas Everyone! Just a couple of things to add to your holiday cheer – first off, two free downloads of Christmas tunes sung by yours truly – just visit www.soundcloud.com/mary-scholz and click the download arrow right next to “add to set.”

The song “A Silent Noel” was arranged and sung by myself and my sister Hilary!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, no matter what you are celebrating!

Merry Christmas!!

BV Show, 10! Show…

Is it possible that I didn’t blog about all of the Bon Voyage festivities? Must have been all of that immediate moving…

WELL, the 10! Show was so much fun and the Bon Voyage show at the Tin Angel was incredible – I am so happy that so many of you made it out – we packed the house! Special thanks to my special guests – Hilary Scholz, Boy Wonder, Alfred James and Rory Donovan. Rather than chat about the details, how about I just show you a few photos and videos?

I’ll post photos with show attendees in a little bit!

I’ll post more videos soon too!

Lestat’s West – San Diego

Thursday night was my first time performing in San Diego! It was at the very awesome Lestat’s West – a theatre that is connected to the next door coffee house. I opened for Canadian Singer/Songwriter Chris Velan (definitely look him up – he’s pretty awesome).

A lot of the time solo songwriter performances are in the corner of a noisy coffee shop or bar – this was a real theatre with real seats, a real stage and sound system and THIS:

I could most certainly get used to this!

Special thanks to Rory Donovan for taking the photos!

February…so far…

On February 1st I just barely made it out of Philadelphia before the ice storm took over the area! I flew into Los Angeles via Denver (which was at -12 with a wind chill bringing it to -30…and they opened up the back door of the plane!)

On the 3rd I performed at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel at the 2 Year Anniversary show for the Indie Showcase – it was a fun night! They invited three of that night’s performers to come back for another show – myself included – so I will be back for a full 2 hour set some time in the spring!

This was my first time seeing the sun set on the beach – well, that is probably incorrect as we vacationed in California when I was in high school but I don’t remember the sunset part…regardless, all the time I spent out here last year I never got to see it!

On Saturday night I went out to dinner with some friends to ‘Casa Sanchez’ in Venice – not only was the food delicious, but there was a fantastic mariachi band that performed for most of the time we were there.  The show was phenominal and made for an awesome night!

Yesterday I had a free day so I went for a walk…which turned into a hike. I made my way up to Griffith Park and hiked up one of the Hollywood Hills. It was definitely not what I had set out to do (I wasn’t wearing hiking appropriate clothing) but it was such an amazing experience.  The view is gorgeous! I definitely recommend it to anyone visiting or living in Los Angeles – just bring lots of water and wear sunscreen!

Rounding the corner of one of the trails and all of a sudden...

You could see all of Los Angeles! From Downtown to the Hollywood sign, to the ocean!

Check out all the trails leading up the mountain

Next up is a show in San Diego at ‘Lestat’s’ on Thursday and one in Venice at ‘The Talking Stick’ on Friday.
Friday’s show will be streaming live starting at 10:30pm est/7:30pacific at http://Ustream.tv/channel/netteradio

Wrapping up 2010

If someone wrapped up 2010 and handed it to me as a gift it would have come in the shape of plane and bus tickets, gas, toll and recording receipts.

First of all, wrapping up the year wraps up my first year of marriage – it was a busy and wonderful year for us and I look forward to the next!

We started out the year in Pittsburgh celebrating the wedding of two wonderful people and close friends of ours. This included a reunion of sorts of my friends from college – it was an amazing way to ring in the new year. As you may or may not have noticed, I love love. And I love all of the people who have entered my life over the years (even the ones that can be a real pain 😉

The year continued with shows in PA and NJ and a LOT of editing for the music video, which I released in February! (Feb 27th)

In March I started with my bus tickets to NYC to work on pre-production for the new EP with Nathan Terry as well as the Cape May Singer/Songwriter Conference and Showcase.

In April I headed out west – first to Arizona for my first ever visit there – and how beautiful it was!! I was amazed by the scenery and loved every second of my three days there exploring and visiting with my cousin Heather!

Then I was off to LA for the ASCAP “I Create Music Expo” and my show in Venice Beach.

In May and June I sang at the Camden Riversharks ball game as well as the National Underground (among other places), saw the Backstreet Boys, James Taylor and Carole King in concert and welcomed the first baby to our group of friends and our first niece to the family!

James Taylor and Carole King!

The summer meant shows in NJ, PA and NY a whole lot of back and forth to NY to work on pre-production – I was pretty sick of the bus and the metro by the end of the summer! But it was well worth it 🙂 It also meant a couple of vacations, some with family, some with friends and some just me and Nick. All great days. In the midst of all that I also did some filming for a couple of spec commercials and a pilot for a web series…busy busy summer! (Not to mention the Phillies games on both coasts, the Union and Eagles game we went to!)

By December the album was all put together and ready for release. I played at the Christmas Village at City Hall here in Philadelphia, had my cd release, had an NYC release show and did the Christmas Special on the Tim Qualls show!

I got to wrap up my year just as I started it – celebrating the wedding of two wonderful friends. I was honored to get to play and sing at the ceremony – it was a wonderful way to end a busy year of music, love and friends.

I hope YOUR year was wonderful as well! Have a fun and SAFE New Years Eve and Day! Here we go 2011!

CD Release 12/10/10

Friday night was the big cd release at The Londonbury in Conshohocken – and it was awesome!

We had a beautiful Christmas tree and fireplace to light the glowing room and set the mood for a great listening room style concert.
